We Black Folk Festival – Cambridge (SOLD OUT)

The banjo, is a symbol, more frequently associated with black counterparts despite its west african origins. The words ‘Black’ and ‘Folk’ when placed next to each other are either oxymorons or in harmony. The music industry has time and time again taken from black culture, rebranded it and convinced mass amounts of people that it was never for the or theres to begin with. The story of Black Folk music is not an exception and with this festival we aim to respark the kinship between ‘Black’ and ‘Folk.’

Tickets are a sliding scale.  Tickets must be reserved. To ensure your seat(s), please reserve your ticket(s) through the buy link.

The ‘Writing 10 Songs In One Day’ Challenge – A Virtual Retreat For Songwriters

Good Friends Discount available. Sign up with a friend and you’ll both receive 20% off of this workshop by clicking here!

As songwriters, we can often get stuck or reach for the same tools when writing – sometimes songs magically come to us, but often we can be sitting around waiting for inspiration for a long time. This virtual retreat is designed to open up your creativity, help you to dive into flow state, explore new tools for songwriting, and to create a safe container for you to take risks.

We will gather for 7 hours to write 10 songs! Led by Naomi Westwater, each song will include a prompt, freewrite, and a form. With a running clock and a group of songwriters as the best accountability buddies, you’ll walk away with 10 new songs for you to develop and flesh out. And guess what, 10 songs that’s an album!

A week after this retreat, there will be a private virtual open mic where each participant will select one of their new songs to share.

WE ARE OFFERING SCHOLARSHIPS TO THIS COURSE – Please email Rachel at rachel@passim.org to apply for a scholarship.

Peter Mulvey presents the Lamplighter Sessions

Peter Mulvey presents the Lamplighter Sessions

The Lamplighter Sessions at Club Passim began over ten years ago and has evolved into a multi-night, one room festival of improvisational art- music, spoken word, visual art, and theater, and always including Hallowe’en. Peter Mulvey was the initial instigator but Barry Rothman soon seized the marionette strings, or the controls of the starship, or what have you. At this point, Mulvey fills the roles of ringmaster and televangelist, while Rothman hides in plain sight, playing his phonographs onstage while making all the secret backroom deals and delivering the occasional veiled threat. Matt Smith, Abby Altman, and the rest of the Passim crew provide a firebox and the assembled musicians provide the fuel. Over the years the Sessions have included Luthier expositions, a reading of Eugene Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros”, in-the-round swaps between stars and fledglings, tributes to Greg Brown and Los Lobos, string music extravaganzas, costume parties, and one consistent event: some permutation of musicians performs Tom Waits’s classic record “Rain Dogs”. Buy a ticket to any given night: you won’t know what you’re going to hear, but that’s because the musicians don’t know either. TICKETS
